Harbor Beacon Research
An independent research firm, built to answer a question most owner-led companies have never had asked about them.
Enterprise-grade research, for companies that were never the customer.
Competitive intelligence of the kind large companies buy routinely – named competitor analysis, market position mapping, demand-side research, infrastructure audit – has never been economically available to a company doing eight or fifteen million dollars a year. Not because the research is harder at that size. Because its cost was dominated by analyst hours.
That constraint has broken. What once required a team and a quarter now requires a method and a fraction of the time. Harbor Beacon Research exists because the economics changed and the demand was always there: thousands of owner-led companies with real advantages and no idea what their invisibility is costing them.
We chose the name deliberately. Research is the last word because it describes what we do. When a Harbor Beacon report states that we reviewed a site, ran a set of queries, and mapped named competitors, that is a literal account of the work.
Three things we hold to.
Accurate is not enough
A report can be entirely correct and still leave an owner feeling audited – at which point they stop reading and nothing changes. Every finding we publish names what to keep as well as what to close. The strongest thing about most companies we research is already there.
Show the derivation
Any figure worth stating is worth explaining. Our estimates carry their inputs and assumptions at the point of use, so a reader who disagrees can substitute their own and recalculate rather than simply distrust the number.
Say the limits out loud
We publish what our research cannot tell you alongside what it can. A firm that never states its limits is asking to be taken on faith, and faith is not what a business decision should rest on.
Who runs it.
Carl George
Managing Director
Carl George founded Harbor Beacon Research after four decades of building and operating companies – most of them owner-led, and most of them facing the same problem from the inside: a business with a real advantage, a market that couldn’t see it, and no reliable way to find out which of the two was actually the constraint.
He has founded seven companies across healthcare technology, education software, speech recognition, digital strategy, and satellite communications. Several were acquired – by Apple, by a Caterpillar spinout, by a pharmacy benefits business later absorbed into Columbia/HCA, and by the speech company whose technology became Dragon NaturallySpeaking. In 2000 he assembled and chaired an eleven-principal group, including a former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force, that bid to acquire the Iridium satellite constellation out of bankruptcy.
One venture did not succeed. Vallon held a granted patent and an IBM partnership and had begun drafting an S-1 when the dot-com capital markets closed in 2000. The product was sound. The window shut. That is part of the relevant credential here, not an omission from it.
Owner-led businesses rarely stall for the reasons written up afterward. They stall on traction and friction – on the distance between what a company has genuinely built and what a buyer can find, verify, and act on. Harbor Beacon Research exists because that distance is measurable, and because the firms living inside it are the least able to see it.
He built this firm to be a top-level research resource an owner can actually reach, so that plans rest on evidence rather than assumption.
Carl George is also Managing Director of Harbor PE.
Founding history and sources: documented record.
What the firm runs on.
Harbor Beacon Research is built around a research platform rather than a billable hour. The method is consistent, the sourcing is consistent, and the depth does not vary with who is available that week.
The platform
Direct retrieval and analysis against a company’s own digital estate, its named competitors, live search results, and category data – resolved into a single structured record that every section of every document is written against.
The method
Four questions, asked the same way every time. Every estimate carries its derivation. Every report carries its limits. Read it in full →
The advisory bench
Harbor Beacon Research is assembling a senior advisory group drawn from global consulting and enterprise technology leadership. Members are named here as they are seated.
The Harbor relationship
Harbor Beacon Research sits alongside Harbor PE, a growth equity firm, and shares its standards of rigor – and none of its positions. Disclosures →
